Backstory

one night, long ago, as i returned from tending my father’s fields, i witnessed a celestial event in the night sky that lit my mind on fire. an unending cascade of multicolored stars streaked and exploded across the sky, shimmering and flaring into blinding flashes across the horizon for what seemed like hours. one star broke from the torrent and raced directly at me, mesmerizing me until it filled my vision and ended in a crack of thunder so loud it knocked me unconscious.

when i came to, it was still night. the same night, who could say? but it was darker than the darkest night i could ever remember. i heard a woman softly whispering and turned to find the source. faintly visible in the grass near my head was a stone that could only be described as pulsing and glowing black. her whisper filled my mind and promised to show me the origin of the lights in the sky, grant me untold magical knowledge and much, much more, but only if i would swear myself into an eternal pact of bondage… dawn slowly broke and my new life began.

after 711 years crossing our physical realm and traveling into several planes above and below, serving as a conduit into this reality for an entity i still do not fully understand, my mind has opened to forces and voices from throughout the cosmos and my memories mix freely with my present perception, occasionally blending completely and causing me to speak to what is no longer there. i am both a messenger and spyglass, not always aware that i am in contact with my master and unwittingly feeding its senses or conveying its wishes.

many know that i have a child to protect and must make the world a safer place for him, but only a handful know that there is another child, an elven child, that i must keep hidden from my master. that child was conceived with an enemy of my master and some believe he is the one that was foretold to bring about my master’s downfall. keeping everyone, including him, from learning this truth is my one overarching goal.

i have kept copious, detailed journals of my travels, encounters and experiences, but as each volume is finished, i tuck it, along with whatever weapons and clothing i am carrying, into a box and hide it in any nearby cave, tree hollow, lake, dungeon, etc., disguising its appearance with spells. then i make a coded note of that location in the one book i will never part with and seal that book with spells of protection. i will never share the key to unlock the code, except in a time of world-ending catastrophe. thus, i begin my adventures anew, sometimes changing my countenance or assuming a new name.

my centuries of existence have left me not weak but wholly uninterested in physical labor. i rely on spells to surmount obstacles and defend myself and others as much as possible. that said, good food and especially good beer can bring me back down to earth and inspire long nights of laughter, games, songs and telling tales both experienced and from legend with my fellow creatures.
