Player Information

Hello, you are probably reading this because someone invited you to our game. Roughly 2-3 times a month, we hang out IRL, drink beer, eat takeout, and play Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The blog here chronicles the story so far, or at least as best we can remember.

In order to join us for game night you need to do two things:

  1. Join the group chat on Telegram – This is where we coordinate scheduling, who’s bringing food, and answer all your questions.
  2. Make a character. Brad will hold your hand through this, or if you want to leave the details to fate, use Fast Character. If your eyes haven’t already glazed over, you can make a character from scratch using the D&D Beyond online tool here. See more info below if you do so.

Once you’ve got a character made you can access the D&D rule books through the D&D Beyond app on your phone/tablet.

Game Info

The D&D universe is known as the Forgotten Realms, a vast ungovernable territory of independent settlements. Our adventure starts in the northern part of the Sword Coast region. Our original characters are from the town of Phandalin, which is near the coastal city of Neverwinter.

Creating a Character

The two basic parts of your character are race (fantasy creature type) and class (your job). Your class determines 90% of your character. Your race gives you minor abilities or bonuses but is mostly for background / story telling. You can read about this stuff in the Player’s Handbook if you want.

If you’re not familiar with D&D classes here is a flowchart to help you decide.

If you’re making your own character on D&D Beyond, use these preferences:

  • Forgotten Realms Wiki – this has tons and tons of info for inspiration, but the specifics may not line up with our particular game. Ask Brad when in doubt.
  • Alignment is your characters moral & ethical compass. Morally you are either Good, Neutral, or Evil (how you treat others – in our game all characters must be either Neutral or Good) . Ethically you are Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic (how you view the social order). If you mapped this the same way as traditional political views it looks like

House Rules

  • No screens at the table – We use paper character sheets for playing and try to preserve the analog atmosphere. Bring a pen/cil and pad of paper.
  • Rolling for Who Picks Up Food – All players roll d20, highest roll buys food for the group. Player who bought previous week is exempt, player who bought two weeks ago rolls with disadvantage. We usually do this in the group chat. DM provides a case of beer and the rest of the players bring snacks/more beer.
  • We use Milestones for leveling (no tracking Experience Points)
  • Rolling for Hit Points – when you level up, roll your hit die. Take the number you rolled, or the average of the hit die, whichever is greater. This gets added to your total maximum Hit Points.
  • Currency – We’re only using gold, this game already involves a lot of math.
  • Encumbrance / Carry Capacity – You can carry [Strength * 15 = number of pounds] in your backpack. I have no interest in tracking this manually, but it is an important rule, so the compromise is we let D&D Beyond track it and only care if/when it brings it to your attention. This requires your digital inventory to be kept current between sessions. Make sure the Encumbrance preference is set correctly (see above screenshot).
